Whey Protein Powder for Bodybuilding Nutrition
on Saturday, July 4, 2009 in Diets & Nutrition
Whey protein powder is the highest quality protein available and should be a staple of proper bodybuilding nutrition. Whey protein is a by-product of milk and considered the gold standard of protein with it’s rich source of branched chain amino acids (BCAAs). There are numerous benefits of whey protein including increased muscle growth and physical performance, weight management, healthy aging and improved wound healing. Fortunately it can be easily supplemented into a diet designed for muscle building. There are 2 types of whey protein powder. Whey protein concentrate is low in fat and approximately 75% pure protein with a high biological value.
**Biological value (BV) is the measure of the efficiency of a protein, how well it is absorbed by the body and used for growth.**
Whey protein isolate is whey in it’s purest form and has the highest biological value. It is processed to remove fat and lactose, offers more protein yet fewer calories per serving than concentrate and has an excellent amino acid profile. Due to it’s high quality, isolate is more expensive than the whey protein concentrates and blends.
Whey protein blends combine both concentrate and isolate whey protein powder which offers a high quality product at a more affordable cost than pure isolate.
When deciding on a particular product, you need to pay close attention to labels and ingredients. Check for additives and chemicals that could potentially replace actual protein, giving you less bang for your buck. If you opt for a blend, choose the one that has the highest ratio of isolate to concentrate. Take your time to research the highest quality product within your budget in order to experience all of the benefits that whey protein has to offer. You also may want to ask around about the taste and texture of a particular product as these things can vary quite drastically.
Whey protein powder can easily be added to shakes, oatmeal, homemade protein bars, yogurt, cottage cheese or just plain old water! Make it a part of your daily routine for optimal muscle growth!

Shauna, What are the Whey protein brands you recommend. I have shopped around and found that some brands contain a good bit of sugar. I try to stay away from those. I have tried the EAS brand and like it. I currently use "GNC Pro Performance® AMP Amplified Wheybolic Extreme 60" (phew, talk about a mouthful!) only becuase the store I went to did not have the EAS brand in stock.
Do you have any specific recommendations?
I want to stay away from anything with sugar and more than 110 calories per serving or so.-
I've been using BioX Xtreme Power Whey Complex for years now and love it! It's a blend so it's not quite as expensive as an isolate but the quality is excellent. Calories range between 120-140 per serving with only 2 grams of sugar. Each serving contains 25 grams of protein. I like this brand because of the very smooth texture, it's not at all chalky and it mixes really well. The chocolate peanut swirl is soooo good! I have a scoop every morning in my oatmeal and sometimes I'll mix it with fat free plain yogurt for a dessert.
