aaimagesIn order to realize optimal benefits from your bodybuilding or muscle building program, a change in your workout routines is periodically required.

Muscle growth, or hypertrophy, relies on the principle of Progressive Overload. This is the process of progressively placing greater than normal demands on the musculature. Simply put, in order to increase muscle growth and strength, you must consistently lift more and make the muscles exert more effort than what they have adapted to.

  • How to Build Muscle and Lose Fat Simultaneously

By Shauna Labelle on Thursday, July 16, 2009 5 comments

mbimagesMany professionals in the health and fitness industry hold different opinions in regards to whether or not it’s possible to build muscle and burn fat simultaneously. Some trainers believe muscle growth and fat loss can coincide, while others argue that it’s simply not realistic. I fall into the third group, the fence sitters if you will. I support the theory that the ability to lose fat and gain muscle may be possible for some people in certain situations with specific circumstances. My apologies for the ambiguity, but I will offer an explanation.

First of all, I should make it clear that I am not referring to competitive bodybuilders as the example in this post. The lifestyle, training and diet of competitive bodybuilders is far too extreme and the recommendation for muscle growth and fat loss are too involved to get into within this particular post. I will be referring to those of us that simply want to look our best, be healthy and have a lean, muscular appearance.

  • The Truth About Building Muscle – Part I

Have you ever gotten to that point in your training where you are doing absolutely everything, yet seeing no results?

You’re taking the supplements, you’re using the ab exercises and pectoral exercises, you’re following the diet, you’re doing the workout routines, you’re reading the books and watching the videos and yet….Nothing.  Or at the very best, dismal results for the amount of effort and time you’re wasting.

This dilemma is by far one of the most common frustrations by people who are on a muscle building routine.  Especially for beginners who find it hard to see past the marketing propaganda that is shoved in their faces, or for guys who are getting their “training advice” from pro bodybuilders whose results are a product of an illegal anabolic!

In this three part series what I will be posting is by far the number one subject I am most passionate about.  We’re going to dispel the myths that surrounding fitness and bodybuilding and present to you the facts that are often “left out” in the search for truth.  We are going to get back to all the basics in the core areas of weight training, diet, supplementation and lifestyle.  Because like anything in life, it’s when ALL the basics are done well, that you will begin to see real results!

  • Effective Muscle Building Workouts Include Supersets

By Shauna Labelle on Friday, July 10, 2009 2 comments

imagesA superset is a combination of two different muscle building exercises performed consequtively with no rest between them in order to increase workout intensity. Supersets are advantageous to a exercises for a number of reasons.

First of all, supersets allow you to save time by eliminating rests between sets. You’ll spend less time in the gym while enjoying all the benefits.

Supersets offer a metabolic boost due to the increased intensity, adding a fat burning component to to your muscle building workouts.
