  • Fire things up! How to Increase Metabolism.

By Travis Steffen on Monday, June 8, 2009in Fat Burning

42-16612443The dictionary defines metabolism as the sum of the physical and chemical processes that occur in the cells, all of which work to produce energy. Simply put, metabolism is the rate at which the body uses energy, or burns calories.

In addition to a number of factors which are out of our control such as genetics, age and gender, our metabolic rate is determined by our level of activity and body composition. Your metabolic rate is based in part on how much your body expects you to have to work. If you are a lean, athletic, very active person you’ll likely have a high metabolism. If on the other hand, you’re a couch potato, well….not so much.

One of the most effective ways to increase metabolism is by building muscle through consistent weight training workouts (and yes, weight training should be included both in muscle building workouts AND fat burning workouts) and a healthy diet plan. Muscle requires more energy (calories) than fat to sustain itself. By lifting weights on a regular basis you can increase your lean muscle mass and therefore increase metabolism. WorkoutBOX offers exceptional muscle building workouts that will meet and exceed your goals and expectations.

High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) has also been shown to increase metabolism. When you exercise within a range of 75% to 90% of your maximum heart rate, your metabolism spikes burning an extreme amount of calories. The big bonus of High Intensity Interval Training is the afterburn effect, in which your metabolic rate stays elevated for an estimated 16 to 24 hours!

It takes a lot of hard work to increase metabolism but the benefits are well worth the effort. Your body will burn more calories at work, at rest, at play and even overnight while you’re snoring away! You’ll enjoy a leaner physique, have more energy, improved body composition and best of all, you won’t have to feel as guilty about indulging in a extra cookie every once in a while!
