  • A High Fiber Diet For Optimal Weight Loss

    14imagesConsuming a high fiber diet is known to be optimal for weight loss yet it is often overlooked in many weight loss diets.

    A high fiber diet incorporates a variety of plant foods including fruits, vegetables, grains and beans. Fiber is a carbohydrate that cannot be absorbed or digested by the body, ultimately passing through the system unchanged and without being broken down into nutrients.

    A high fiber diet can be beneficial to weight loss in a number of ways. Fibrous foods tend to be dense in volume but low in calories, keeping the stomach satiated for longer. Fiber may also impair the body’s ability to absorb fat and some sugars by ‘clinging’ to them and shuttling them through the digestive tract.

    Aside from promoting weight loss, a high fiber diet offers many other health benefits as well including the prevention of certain cancers, heart disease, kidney stones, hemorrhoids and of course constipation.

    The recommended daily intake for fiber ranges between 25 to 35 grams, yet most of us consume about half of that on a good day. Adding fiber to your healthy weight loss diet is simple and can be delicious as well! Add more fruits and vegetables to meals and snacks, switch to wild rice and whole grain breads. Try old fashioned, slow cooking oatmeal as opposed to it’s instant counterpart. Toss beans or legumes in with your salad and berries or dried fruit in with your breakfast cereal or opt for the whole fruit, skin and all in place of fruit juice!

    Try this super easy, tasty, satisfying breakfast for a whopping 12 grams of low fat, low calorie fiber!

    *Mix a half cup of non fat, sugar free vanilla yogurt (or flavor of choice) with 1/3 cup all bran cereal, 1 Tbsp  ground flaxseeds and a half cup of berries. Fast, easy and fiber-licious!*
