  • How to Stop Holiday Weight Gain

By Travis Steffen on Monday, December 20, 2010in Diets & Foods

The holidays can be great. Family, friends, food, fun, festivities…you get the idea.

That being said, it’s no secret that the uglier side of the holidays can run your body through the wringer. Stress, possible jet lag, breaking from your usual routine, lack of exercise, tons of junk food and pressure to binge eat from everyone you talk to. Tally this all up and the results usually come out to be disastrous for your body.

Then January 1st rolls around, and one of your resolutions is to get in better shape in some way. You’ve got grand aspirations for what you’re going to do, what you’re going to look like, and how you’re going to do it.

But the first step? To get back to where your body was before the holidays!

Unless you’re careful and conscious of what you’re doing, you may find that you’ve gained 5+ lbs of fat over the 2-3 week holiday season. Hard to believe, right? It’s the truth.

A more harsh truth is that it might take close to a month to undo what you’ve done to yourself! That’s nearly 2 months – or 1/6th of the whole year – of time spent treading water and not taking a single step closer to your goals. Pretty shocking when you think about it.

    My advice?

Have fun and socialize, but be smart. When you walk in to that room full of junk and goodies that’s such a staple of the holiday season for most, ask yourself one question before you eat anything:

    Do I really want this?

Yeah, okay, it tastes good. But Once you’ve chewed and swallowed, that’s the end of the good feelings. Then comes the guilt, the bloated feeling, the added weight, and the time spent “treading water” when working towards your goals.

Does this mean you can’t indulge at all? No. But being conscious of what you’re eating and how much you’re eating is going to help you more than you realize.

At the very least, it will add another month or so to the time you’ll have to reach your goals this year. And isn’t shattering a goal and looking in the mirror with a sense of pride SO much more satisfying than an extra piece of fudge or two (or six or seven)?

Be strong. Be conscious. Find a way to make things happen. And happy holidays from all of us at WorkoutBOX!
