Yoga is a complex system of actions and movements that focus on creating harmony between the body and the mind. It is considered to be one of the oldest physical disciplines as it has been practiced for over 4000 years.
Today, yoga is a popular activity for athletes, adults, children and seniors. The beauty of yoga is that it can be modified to suit all levels of ability … for the beginner to the most advanced expert. Yoga provides a wide variety of physical and mental benefits, including the ability to calm the mind, lower blood pressure, increase strength and flexibility. As a result, yoga energizes our bodies and calms our minds.
There are many different styles of yoga to accommodate the needs of every practice. Some are slow and focus on breathing and endurance (i.e., Hatha) while others are more fast-paced and connected to the rhythm of the breath (i.e., Vinyasa). Hatha is the most commonly used form of yoga as it provides a good foundation for all other yoga endeavors.
Regardless of which style you choose it is recommended you set aside an unobstructed area, have a yoga mat and choose clothing that is ideal for moving through a wide range of motion without getting in the way.
